Over the last year, I have sat back and watched from afar many black business owners leaving money on the table. Let me explain what I mean and it may ruffle some feathers. Keep in mind this is just my opinion. Based on my experience, many black business owners think too small. Now I fully understand that everyone does not have a desire to build a large business that requires a ton of staff. Let me give you an example of what I call “small thinking” to help you see exactly what I am talking about. Can you tell me which site was probably the first so-called Web 2.0 Social Networking site on the Internet? Would you believe it might have been BlackPlanet.com? Now watch what I say carefully because it can be taken the wrong way! What would have happened if “Black Planet” did not have the word “Black” in it? I’ll tell you… …it would be called “MySpace.” Yep, Black Planet could have been MySpace but because they targeted a niche instead of the general market and they got kicked to the curb! While there isn’t anything wrong with targeting blacks or any niche market the site did not invite other ethnic groups and races because the name said “Black.” Keep in mind this is my opinion but it makes me wonder how two sites could be exactly the same and the only difference is the name. One is worth billions and the other has quickly become a has been! Hmmm! My point is as a black business owner you can pick any market you would like to target. That’s your prerogative. But why would you want to leave money on the table when you don’t have too? I’m sure someone will say, “I want to help my people!” What makes you think I don’t or anyone else for that matter? As a black business owner you should want to be in a position to provide the help you feel people need! If you’re struggling to stay afloat how can you help? In my opinion, I find a lot of black business owners targeting groups of people instead of targeting problems, wants and needs. To learn more about the difference and why it’s important visit and join The Work from Home Club. Let me explain! If I target a specific problem and develop a solution for that problem I will get business from everyone who has that problem regardless of race or ethnic background. However, if I target a specific group of people I limit myself to that group. Consequently, I can limit my income and begin to leave money on the table. This is what I call “small thinking.” If you are a black business owner, I hope I got you thinking a little bigger than you normally would! If so, I have done my job! Please stop leaving money on the table as it’s waiting for you! Until next time! Shawn Nelson, MSA Co-Founder of WhatBusinessToDo.com
