 GM Layoffs
By Jennifer Stanonis GM employees locally and across North America are bracing for more restructuring from the company. GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner announced more cuts Tuesday morning. GM plans to trim 20 percent of its US and Canadian salary budget as it adjusts to a declining market. The automaker will cut truck production, and several thousand more jobs through normal attrition and retirements, and through early retirements and buyout offers.
The plant manager at the GM Tonawanda Engine Plant says the main impact locally from these latest cuts will be the salary budget. "I think that's going to be the biggest impact for us," Tonawanda GM Plant Manager Steve Finch said. "We don't know specific numbers... but needless to say there will be some impact to our salary work force."
In terms of cuts in truck production Finch says that shouldn't have a large impact on the Tonawanda facility. "Right now we have very little of our volume that goes to the truck business. Most of the products that we make go into cars that GM makes and in fact some of those cars and some of those product lines are actually increasing in volume," Finch said.
Also, a large chunk of the salary cost reduction is to come from eliminating health care benefits for salaried retirees in the US. Wagoner says those workers will get an increase from the company's over-funded pension fund to help compensate for Medicare and supplemental insurance.
Many local GM workers say they know times are hard but really don't know what's going to happen. "Anytime anyone loses a job it's bad but times are really rough right now," one employee said.
"You never know... we'll wait and see," another local employee said.
GM officials say the cuts will need to be implemented by the end of this year. More details about the latest cuts should be released during the next few weeks.
