I have been very busy over the last few months and didn't have time to sign up and use the Google GrandCentral Phone Number and Voicemail Service.
Guess what happened when I visited the site and tried to join? I couldn't. I had to sign up to be notified when it would be available to the public.
However, I received a suprise about six hours later. It was an email telling me I have been invited to become a beta tester for the Google GrandCentral phone service.
Immediately, I began to sign up and withn 5-minutes, I had my own Google phone number with a local area code.
Here's a few of the cool features:
1. Call Screening - when people call they will be asked to leave their name. Then you will hear the name and if you do not desire to talk with them it will go to voice mail.
2. ListenIn - if the person doesn't leave a name and begins leaving a message you can ListenIn and determine if you want to take the call. Yes, you can hear the person leaving a message.
3. Call Record - You can record your conversation and play it back at a later time. Just be careful with the laws in your state and make sure you let it be known that you are, or will, record the call.
4. Greetings - You can have a different greeting for each caller or group (i.e., family, customers, students, work, etc.)
5. RingShare - You can set up custom rings for each person or group to add flavor to their call experience.
Here's one tip: Make sure when you are setting up your account you are next to a phone. There are a few things you will have to do in order to compete the process.
Also, when you set up the recording for your name and greeting you have to initiate it online. The system will call the number you tell it and prompt you to record. That's pretty cool!
