 Whenver a person starts marketing online they eventually hear about SEO (Search Engine Optimization). They dig a little deeper and hear the hoopla about it. The first question they have is, "How can I improve search engine rankings?"
Now, I am very leary about providing this answer because most people will overlook it. But it has to be said, so here it goes...
....If you want to get better search engine rankings you must put in the work! It's not hard work but it still must be done.
Not what you expected right? Looking for me to talk about key word research, optimizing the page and getting back links? Sorry, this is not that kind of post. :)
Let me explain.
For some reason, people expect to put in minimum work and expect maximum return. But with SEO sometimes things take time depending on your competition! You can get almost instant traffic using Social Marketing tactics but that also requires some effort too! It's important to note that consistent effort is required.
Here's something that's critical to your optimization...
...you must have good content on the site that you plan to optimize. What sense would it make to get traffic when your content sucks? If your content is good people will start linking to it and you will get some "Link Love."
On top of that, you must have a plan on how you want to monetize the traffic. For example, many people create sites, place Adsense and Affiliate products on them to make money. Even more people include a sign up form and offer people a hot report to download. This way they can follow up with people and offer them additional information, products and services.
With search engine optimization you should always focus on the end goal(s) and work backwards. This is what most people overlook.
If you are selling a product or service is your site set up to convert that traffic? How will you follow up with that traffic?
I know, I know this stuff is elementary but let me tell you many people are not aware of the very basics before you even touch improving search engine rankings.
Here are a few tips to get you started:
- Do people want what you are offering?
- Is your on-page stuff taken care of?
- Is your content written for people and not the search engines?
- How much time or money are you willing to invest?
Did you expect me to go into details? Now come on there is a ton of information on the Internet to help you learn SEO. How do you think I got started? Someone pointed me in the right direction, I read a ton of stuff, applied it, saw the results or mistakes, made corrections and kept tweaking.
If you want the SEO secret, I just gave it to you in the previous sentence! Read it again!
