According to Wikipedia, “A niche market also known as a target market is a focused, targetable portion (subset) of a market sector.” Let’s use a few examples to help you to better understand niche marketing! Toothpaste Years ago you had the same toothpaste you used in the morning, during the day and at night! Now you have toothpaste you can use in the morning and then another you use at night that claims to “whiten” your teeth (see for yourself). Now you will proabably purchase two tubes of toothpaste instead of one. But why? It’s because you feel the second one will actually deliver on its promises based on the marketing. You want the nighttime fresh feeling don't you? :) Pampers There was a time where you had one type of pampers for children up until the time they were able to walk and be potty trained. Now you have several variations of pampers:
- For babies
- For active babies
- For learning toddlers
- For potty trainers
Baby Wipes fall within the same category too:
- Sensitive wipes
- Swiper wipes
- Clean n Go
- Kandoo
Take a look for youself and see what I am talking about (Pampers and Wipes). These companies saw an opportunity to provide additional products to a niche market that had varying needs at different times.
Here’s another example!
Let’s say you have a product that targets the dating crowd. Now with a little tweaking you can sell that same product to the relationship crowd. That’s exactly what these companies do! The cool part is they do not have to recreate the wheel.
How do you know the product you are purchasing that is supposed to be tailored to your specific want or need is actually that much different than the original you currently have?
The next time you watch a TV commercial pay attention to how they segment the market by offering products to meet a specific want or need! Now it's time to look at your products and services to determine additional niches you can target.
Until next time!
