The day I heard the Carnegie Mellon professor’s “Last Lecture" my life was "forever changed." Thank you Randy Pausch.
Randy Pausch, the Carnegie Mellon Professor and married father of three was truly a remarkable man. He passed away on Friday, but he will always be remembered for his “Last Lecture.” He believed that you should live for the moment and “achieve your Childhood Dreams.” I first heard Randy Pausch speak during an interview with Dr. Oz on Oprah. Randy had pancreatic cancer but he had an amazing ability to be positive. Randy stated that “he can't change the cards he's been dealt, but he can control how he plays them." If you are hopeful, if you are optimistic, other people want to help you. And if you are down in the dumps, other people may still help you, but I've noticed that they're walking, not running, over to you," he says. "In the lecture, I talk about you've got to decide pretty early in life whether you're going to be a Tigger or an Eeyore. What I found is if you're an upbeat person, people will flock to help you, and suddenly everything gets easier."
When I learned of Randy’s philosophy, I had recently been downsized from my job of 12 years. I was scared and worried that I wouldn’t be able to support my family. But, during those first few weeks, I kept going back to watch Randy Paush’s life-affirming lecture on the internet many times. He wanted his students and colleagues to go on without him and do great things. But, most of all, he wanted his children to live the life to the fullest and follow their dreams. Like many others who’ve watched Randy Pausch’s lecture, I was so moved and inspired. I’ve learned that you can’t get anywhere if you let fear overtake you. My passion and dreams are so much more important. I try to let them be my guide. What are your passions? What are your dreams? When asked if Randy thinks his life was well used, he replied, I'm married to an incredible woman, and I have great kids, and it's hard for me to imagine," he says. "I like to think that I have helped a lot of other people—and that's the best definition I know of time well spent." Randy, you’ve helped me so much, and although I never got the chance to meet you personally. I will be forever grateful for the man that you were. Don’t wait to live your dream. Start today. Today is the beginning of your future.
