TAKING CARE OF MOM AND DAD

Taking care of mom and dad is something that I never really thought about.  Most children think that mom and dad will always be there to mend their wounds, broken hearts, and wipe away their tears.  But get prepared!

We all love our parents and appreciate what they have done to get us to adulthood.  You realize that they have made many sacrifices for you.  You were conceived and from that moment on their life would be different.  They were thrilled to make the sacrifices though.

So, years have passed and the tables have turned.  Your parents have gotten much older and fragile.  The time has come to be the caregiver.  What have you done to prepare you for this moment in time.  Chances are you haven't even thought about it!

WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW

The parents get older and strickened with illnesses that require caregiving by someone.  That someone is usually one of the children...YOU!  But the parent has their own feelings of isolation.  They feel alone and abandon by the world and a loss to connect to society.  Just imagine...you have always been in total control of providing for an entire family and now it is a challenge to walk, bath, or even eat on your own.  It is hard to imagine what the elder parent must be feeling.

The National Alliance For Caregiving has recently published a study on heavy duty caregiving and poor health.  The study says that family caregivers often face a downward spiral of health that worsens on a result of giving care.  The study says that caregivers stated their lives became more difficult in a number of ways:

-90% more stress or worry
-69% less time spent with family and friends
-51% now taking more medication
-37% less time spent at work
-10% more frequent use of alcohol or prescription drugs

Know the facts!  More than 2.5 million family caregivers isolated in homes across America suffer from depression, stress and rapid declining health, often putting the needs of loved ones before their own.

WHAT WE NEED TO DO

Be prepared!   Don't put yourself at risk by ignoring your needs.  Unfortunately for many caregivers there is a need or a desire to repay the parent for the years they gave to them.  But care for yourself first because if you are not healthy you are no help to the parent.

Get educated!  Know what kind of assistance is out there by doing research, research, research!  Know that you will need help!  Don't be afraid or embarrassed to ask, because you are going to need breaks.  We feel we know our parents best.  But there will come a time you will need professional assistance.  ASK for help and let go of the illusion that you can do it all!
