The Cheapest, Easiest Way to Protect Your Reputation as a Writer
As a writer, people expect for your communication to be exemplary at all times; no exceptions. After all, you claim to be a wordsmith, right? You are supposed to have a mastery of the English language that others do not or cannot possess. So, what is the easiest way to tarnish your image and lose the confidence of those who might pay you to do what you love?
You guessed it – leaving errors in written communication.
With online correspondence being the predominant and preferred method of communication in this day and age, it would be safe to assume that professional writers are especially conscious of how they present themselves on the worldwide web. On the contrary, however, many writers do not take their online dealings as seriously as they should. Email messages, forum posts, and even advertisements are riddled with spelling and grammatical errors, awkward sentences, and poorly expressed ideas. Such carelessness lets people know that you either are a poor writer or an unfocused individual. Either way, such a presentation of one’s self causes the professional writer to lose money.
The writing/editing industry is so competitive, that we as professionals need to take advantage of every opportunity to showcase our talent and expertise. If you’ve got it, flaunt it! The greatest advantage, however, is that we have a unique opportunity to advertise every time we send anyone a message online – superior writing is our business!
So what is the cheapest, easiest way to preserve your good reputation as a writer and make a great impression every time you communicate? Proofread everything that you send out, every time, period.
Just because you’re only sending a quick text message to a client or a reply to someone in an online forum, that doesn’t mean you should be careless in your composition. Remember, you are being held to a higher standard, whether you or the public realizes it or not, and you can’t afford to adversely affect your image as a master of the written word. Take time to read and reread everything you write before you send it out. Trust me; 85% of my clientele has found me as a result of my participation in online forums, and no matter what the topic, people know me because of the way I express myself. I am not unnecessarily wordy or aloof; I just take painstaking efforts to make sure that my communication is as appropriate, relevant, and well written as possible. The one thing that has the power to spoil an otherwise perfect written expression is the failure to proofread it.
Protect your paycheck; proofread.
